Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge will be opened to the public before Christmas, as construction reaches about 80 per cent completion.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during an inspection of the project, acknowledging that work had exceeded the initial September completion deadline.

He said the inspection was aimed at assessing progress and identifying the causes of the delay, stressing that engineering quality and public safety would not be compromised to meet the new deadline.

The governor explained that the project involved installing more than 300 tonnes of steel at heights of up to 25 metres, making it a technically demanding undertaking.

According to him, three of the four major steel components, designed to resemble interwoven cane, have been completed, while work continues on the remaining section.

He added that lighting in the colours of Lagos State would be installed to improve the bridge’s appearance. Other finishing works, including cleaning, repainting of kerbs, landscaping and restoration of affected areas, would also be completed before its opening.

Sanwo-Olu expressed hope that the area would become a hub for recreation, cultural heritage and tourism, reflecting the community’s history and identity.

The bridge project, which commenced in 2022, is part of the state government’s infrastructure drive to ease traffic congestion along the Opebi, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Mende and Ojota corridor.
