The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent asphalt repairs.

The repair work is scheduled to commence on Friday night, October 16, 2026, and continue through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun, said the repairs would affect both inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge.

He explained that sections of the bridge would be partially closed one at a time, while one lane would remain open to allow traffic to move.

The government said officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be deployed to manage traffic and minimise delays around the affected areas.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead, consider alternative routes and allow extra time for their trips during the repair period.

The government also urged road users to remain patient, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials to ensure smooth movement throughout the exercise.
