The Mexican government has approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico.

Omokri disclosed this in a post on X on Tuesday, stating that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, had delivered the agrément confirming his acceptance by the Mexican government.

An agrément is the formal approval granted by a receiving country for a diplomat appointed to serve as an ambassador.

According to Omokri, his appointment also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

He said the Mexican government’s approval was formally conveyed to the Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, in Abuja.

In his post, Omokri expressed gratitude over the development and confirmed his appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.

The president approved the posting of 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors, following the recall of Nigeria’s previous ambassadors in September 2023.

The earlier recall involved 41 non-career and 42 career ambassadors, although the government did not provide a specific reason for the decision.

Several of the newly appointed ambassadors have since assumed their diplomatic responsibilities.
