Six opposition political parties have begun consultations with five presidential candidates to strengthen cooperation and develop a common strategy ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The parties involved are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

The presidential candidates consulted include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke of the PRP.

Salihu Lukman, who issued a statement on Wednesday on behalf of the coalition parties, said the consultations followed resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit.

The summit called for greater cooperation among opposition parties to protect multiparty democracy and promote the interests of Nigerians.

Lukman said the meetings were intended to help party leaders and presidential candidates identify common interests, strengthen collaboration and develop a shared democratic agenda ahead of the elections.

He added that Nigeria’s challenges required serious engagement across party lines, urging political leaders to prioritise the country’s future and citizens’ welfare over personal and party interests.

According to him, the consultations are ongoing, with further meetings expected to build on the summit’s resolutions.

Lukman said Nigerians would be informed of any major decisions and agreed next steps as discussions progress.

However, the coalition has not announced any agreement on a single opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
